Two Spot Goby - Signigobius biocellatus

The Two Spot Goby is also referred to as the TwinSpot Goby, Signal Goby, or Crabeye Goby. The head and body are white splattered with orange markings. Its erect dorsal fins are distinctly marked by eyespots.

The Two Spot Goby is mottled brown, with big black pelvic fins and two distinct eyes spots (one on each of the two dorsal fins).This fish can be difficult to keep in the aquariums without live rock and live sand. To increase your success with the Two Spot Goby fish it is important to keep it in a tank with live sand on the bottom. Do not keep the Two Spot Goby with any remotely aggressive fishes, including food competitors. This species is rarely aggressive towards other bottom-dwelling fishes.

Under correct conditions, the Two Spot Goby will spawn successfully in an aquarium.

Feeding and Diet:
Usually, the Two Spot Goby feeds off the bottom sifting through the sand for food. It should be fed a variety of live vitamin-enriched frozen brine shrimp, mysid shrimp, live black worms, and prepared foods for carnivores.

The Two Spot Goby has a pair of false eye pots on its dorsal fin. When another fish sees the eye spots, it is fooled into thinking that side of this samll fish is actually the head of a much larger fish.

Minimum Tank Size Suggested:
The Two Spot Goby should reside in a 30 gallon or larger aquarium with live sand as a substrate, and an attached populated refugium. It will rarely act aggressively towards other fish, but is territorial, and will fight with its own kind unless they are a mated pair.

General Size Specifications:
The Two Spot Goby grows up to 3 inches. These fish generally will come to you at 2 to 3 inches.

Habitat:
The Two Spot Goby is found in Indo-Pacific Ocean from Philippines to the Solomon Islands, and south to Australia.

Tank Conditions:
The Two Spot Goby prefer a water temperature between 72 to 81°F (22 - 27°C). Their natural diet consists mainly of zooplankton. They requires a meaty diet, i.e., enriched brine shrimp, mysis, finely chopped fish or shrimp flesh, and other various frozen carnivore foods, with one or two feedings per day. The Two Spot Goby uses its mouth to carry away sand and rubble, thereby creating a home in the sediment. Usually the Two Spot Goby are observed in pairs in the wild where it feeds by taking large amounts of sand in its mouth and sifting out benthic invertebrates.

Breeding:
The Two Spot Goby are very difficult to maintain in the home aquarium, as most slowly starve to death and should be only kept as a mated pair. The breeding behavior of the Two Spot Goby is very unique. They form monogamous pairs and share a burrow. The gravid female nibbles the male's body before spawning and then enters the burrow and deposits her eggs. After spawning the male is sealed in the burrow at which time he fertilizes the eggs, guards and possibly aerates them. For two to three days the male resides in the burrow.

During this period the female Two Spot Goby will occasionally open the chamber and liberate the male and the pair will engage in burrow maintenance. The male then re-enters the burrow and is once again sealed in. Eventually the male exits the burrow one last time and both parents close the entrance and move to a new burrow or reopen an old one nearby. Finally, the burrow is opened a final time and a single juvenile fish emerges.
