True Falcula Butterfly Fish - Chaetodon falcula

The Falcula Butterflyfish, also known as the Sickle Butterflyfish, is mostly white becoming yellow dorsally. It has a series of narrow black stripes on its sides, two patches of black on the dorsal side, and a black eye band. A 100 gallon or larger fish-only aquarium with other butterflyfish is a good environment. The Falcula Butterflyfish will eat anemones, hard corals, and mushroom anemones causing problems in a reef aquarium.

It should be fed a variety of meaty foods, crustacean flesh, mysid shrimp, frozen preparations, with an occasional anemone as a treat. A hardy addition to fish only and very large reef systems. Some authors rate this species more highly, right up with the highest survival-scored Pacific Double Saddle Butterflyfish, Chaetodon ulietensis. Not reef safe as it is know to pick at coral polyps, fanworms and feather dusters.

Maximum Size:
True Falcula / the Chaetodon falcula grows up to 8 inches.

General Size Specifications:
The small size will come to you generally 1 to 2 inches; the medium generally 3 to 4 inches; the large generally 5 to 6 inches not including the caudal fin.

Minimum Tank Size:
The True Falcula Butterfly prefers a tank of at least 80 gallons with plenty of places to hide & swim.

Water Conditions:
Keep water quality high (SG 1.020 - 1.025, pH 8.1 - 8.4, Temp. 72 - 78° F).

Temperament:
The temperature is a very crucial thing for the stumbo butterfly. Generally keep the temperature at 69-79F If the fish changes color, put some ice on top of the water to cool the fish down

Habitat:
Indian Ocean: East Africa south to 27°S and east to Indonesia.

Feeding and Diet:
This fish consists of many scallops, and worms. If fed with worms, you have to dip it with water. True Falcula Butterfly fish will also eat apples, and occasionally oranges.

Breeding:
These fishes are very easy to breed. Male and Male can lay eggs, and mate. Female and female however CANNOT lay eggs. They will need a male to help them incubate the eggs. When mating the color will turn black. The fish might appeared to be upside down swimming on the side. It might even look dead!!
