Tear Drop Butterfly Fish - Chaetodon unimaculatus

The Teardrop Butterfly Fish can be recognized by its colorations. The dorsal, anal and ventral fins are yellow. The lower sides are white. There is a black spot on the upper side and a black bar passing though the eye. A black line crosses the caudal peduncle and the adjacent dorsal and anal fins.

The Teardrop Butterfly Fish species grows up to 20cm in length. The Teardrop Butterfly Fish reaches an average length of about five inches, but some specimens have been seen on occasion at about seven inches.

The body of the Teardrop Butterfly Fish white on the bottom half and various shades of yellow on the top half. There are some yellow markings mid-body. The pectoral fin is clear and the anal fin is yellow. It is marked with a large black spot on the upper center of the body. It has two wide, black, vertical bands. One runs through the eye and the other through the ends of the dorsal fin, caudal peduncle, and the anal fin. The mouth area in front of the eyes is white.

Habitat:
The Teardrop Butterfly Fish is a marine species that is recorded from the Western Pacific. In Australia, the Teardrop Butterfly Fish is known form the north-western coast of Western Australia, around the tropical north (except for parts of the Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria) and south to the central coast of new South Wales.

The Teardrop Butterfly Fish are found in small groups, pairs or even singly on the reef. inhabits various depths from shallower waters out to the deeper waters of 60 plus feet. The distribution of this species extends from Hawaii southward to central Polynesia and westward through Micronesia, Melanesia, and the East Indies, and then on across the Indian Ocean to the coast of Africa.

As a juvenile, the Teardrop Butterfly Fish fish will adapt to tank life and foods fairly well. However, as adults they are slow to learn and are sometime difficult to get to eat. Like most fish in the Butterfly Fish Family, the Teardrop Butterfly Fish are coral pickers, but also eat small marine life and algae of rocks and coral.

The Teardrop Butterfly Fish diet includes hard and soft corals, marine invertebrates and filamentous algae. They eat brine, dried or frozen shrimp, nori, dried blood worms and basic flake foods.

The Teardrop Butterfly Fish can be sensitive to ammonia levels and bacterial infections. Moreover the Teardrop Butterfly Fish are harmless to human species.

Minimum Tank Size:
The Teardrop Butterflyfish will do best in a 70 gallon or larger fish-only aquarium. The Teardrop Butterflyfish may reside in a reef environment with other butterflyfish, but will eat different invertebrates present in the tank.

Feeding and Diet:
Its diet should include both meaty foods and vegetable matter.
