Spotted Sharpnose Puffer - Canthigaster punctatissimus

The Spotted Sharp nose Puffer also known as the Spotted Puffer is a member of Canthigaster genus which is generally referred as Sharp-nosed Puffers or Tobies. The Spotted Sharp nose Puffer fish has an amazing red colour covering its entire body with white spots. The Spotted Sharp nose Puffer lacks pelvic fins this nocturnal variety has mastered to use its pectoral fins to swim around.

The Spotted Sharp nose Puffer is usually found in clear lagoon and seaward reefs surrounded by sponges. It is observed that the Spotted Sharp nose Puffer is either solitary or paired. The Spotted Sharp nose Puffer usually finds its shelter in dead and living corals. This variety of puffer is not reef compatible, as it will eat invertebrates found in the reef tank.

The Spotted Sharp nose Puffer is a poisonous fish an it is not meant for human consumption. It has the ability to inflate itself to twice its original size through ingestion of air or water. This mode of behaviour is exhibited by this fish during stress or to gain protection from possible predators.

The Spotted Sharp nose Puffer mode of reproduction is by scattering eggs and is relatively easy to maintain them. The Spotted Sharp nose Puffer prefers a marine tank set up comprising of Coral or rock and it should have plants with plenty of light. It is advisable to have the Spotted Sharp nose Puffer in a fish only aquarium. Its teeth are actually a fused beak-like structure which it uses to crush its prey.

Feeding and Diet: The Spotted Sharpnose Puffer is basically omnivorous. And it feeds on a variety of diet which includes meaty foods comprising of squid clams, and hard shelled shrimp. It consumes such a variety to check the growth of teeth.
