Product Description

Regal Angelfish - Pygoplites diacanthus - Regal Angel Fish

Regal Angelfish - Pygoplites diacanthus

The Regal Angelfish can be recognised by the alternating yellow and black-edged white bars on the body. The soft part of the dorsal fin is blue with black scribbles. The anal fin has yellow and blue stripes. The caudal fin is yellow.

The Regal Angel is categorized as a medium-sized Angelfish species that is best kept singly, or as a mated pair. Perhaps due to how this fish is handled when collected from the Indo-Pacific region, Indian Ocean and Red Sea specimens are more likely to be hardier, and therefore adapt more readily to aquarium life. A rather shy and touchy fish when it comes to acclimation, be sure it is fully acclimated before introducing it into an aquarium where aggressive species are present, and that it has lots of places where it can hide to keep away from its tankmates.

A minimum of a 100-gallon tank with plenty of hiding places and live rock for grazing will offer a good environment. The Regal Angelfish is prone to nip at large-polyped stony corals, soft corals (sessile invertebrates) and clam mantles, but may be kept with small-polyped stony corals and somewhat noxious soft corals.

Size: To 9.8 inches.

Minimum Tank Size Suggested: 100 gallons

Temperature:
No special requirements. Normal temperatures for marine fish lies between 75 and 79 degrees.

Reef Tank Suitability:
Will nip at clam mantles, large-polyped stony and some soft corals, such as Xenia, but can usually be kept with the more noxious as well as small-polyped stony corals.

Habitat:
The Regal Angelfish are one of the more common Pomacanthids on the Great Barrier Reef. They like areas with lots of holes and crevices. They prefer rich coral areas with currents and moderate wave action. They are always on the move swimming from crevice to crevice in search of food. Found at depths from 1-20 meters (3-66 ft.). Best kept in a well established live rock aquarium, and provided with plenty of shelter for hiding.

Specific Care Information:
The Regal Angelfish is difficult to keep in captivity. Young specimens under 20 cm (8 inches) seem to adapt better to aquarium life than adults. Regal Angelfish are finicky eaters and are therefore recommended only for experienced aquarists with large show tanks and availability of a large variety of foods It is important that you feed angelfish all kinds of live, frozen, and prepared formula foods. Best to feed small amounts several times a day. A good formula that can be made at home consists of mussels, shrimp, squid, and spinach.

Diet:
Primarily a carnivore that feeds on sponges and tunicates in nature, individual specimens will vary in their interest in wanting to eat aquarium fares. Fresh chopped meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, marine fish flesh, scallops, and frozen preparations suitable for herbivores and angelfishes with this type of specialized diet should be offered. Feed 2 to 3 times per day.
