Product Description

Lunare Wrasse - Thalassoma lunare - Lyretail Wrasse - Moon Wrasse

Lunare Wrasse - Thalassoma lunare

The Lunare Thalassoma lunare is commonly known as Lunare Wrasse, Lyretail Wrasse or Moon Wrasse. The Lunare Wrasse fish is a member of Labridae family. They are very attractive, colourful free swimming fish easily observed in the tropical and warm temperate waters of the Indo-Pacific. The Thalassoma lunare has an amazing capability to change its body colour as it becomes an adult. This unique phenomenon is termed as "florescent camouflage". The lower half of the younger ones is blue in colour with a black blotch on the caudal fin base and also a black spot in the middle of the dorsal fin. An adult Lunare Wrasse can be spotted with a green body, bright facial and fin and yellow lunate tail. However, large male members of this species have blue colour head that gradually fades to green on its tail. They also have dark pink or red lines on their head, which extends over the body making it more attractive. The active swimmers have blue pectoral fins and yellow patches in caudal fin. The truncate caudal fins of the young Thalassoma lunare become lunate in adult fish. Extended long dorsal fins and pectoral fins aid these powerful swimmers.

The Thalassoma lunare is well for changing their body colour. Hence they are known as protogynous hermaphrodites. This fish exhibits a unique behavior of burying themselves deep in the sand while sleeping. They are easy to maintain and breeding is not observed in captivity.

They are known to have a longer life span when compared to other fishes. Main point to be noted is that the tank has to be well maintained with lot of water and plenty of light. They are not generally reef compatible. An ideal tank would have live rocks for the fish to hide and relatively aggressive tank mates. It is always advisable to add the Thalassoma lunare fish last in the tank as they dislike any new members added to the existing aquarium set up. Though they are passive in nature, well established Thalassoma lunare frequently indulge in territorial dispute.

Maximum Size:
The Thalassoma lunare fish can grow up to 12 inches in size.

General Size Specifications:
The smaller ones generally come in 2 to 3 inches and the larger variety around 3 to 4 inches.
