Aquarium Upgrade

Aquarium Upgrade is the process of moving your aquarium set up from your present tank size to a larger tank. This upgrade may be triggered by any reason ranging from increased stocking, to growing size of the inmates, to installing aquarium equipment, to some damage to the present aquarium, to simply desiring to have a large aquarium. Now, whenever you transfer your fishes, new or old, to a new tank you need to acclimatize them to the new upgraded environment so that they return to normalcy as soon as possible.

Aquarium Upgrade may prove stressful for the fishes and therefore, the process has to be carried out with complete precision. While upgrading an aquarium, you need to keep in mind the following points in the new tank:

  • Right Lighting.
  • Ample Live Rocks.
  • Prolific Sand Bed.
  • Power Heads.
  • Adequate external Nutrients Supply.
  • Readily available food within the tank.
  • Efficient Aquarium Equipment.

  • Aquarium Upgrade – Some Process Tips.
  • Buying a new Tank. In case you plan to acquire new fishes then don’t buy them the same day as the tank. You will need to set the new tank up and stabilize it for a few days before transferring any fishes into it.
  • Cleaning the new tank. Clean your new tank every 15 days in order to avoid any algal growth imparting Green color to the water. To clean the tank, remove 25% of the tank water and fill in the same quantity of fresh water. In addition, make sure that your tank is well vacuumed and the Filter Media is cleaned regularly. Make sure that the new tank has no cleaning agent residues left.
  • Water Quality. Next, you will need to install a new Filter and a Heater to stabilize the water quality of your new tank at the desired level. For this, fill 3/4th of the new tank with water and start the Heater. Let the tank stand like this for 24 hours. After this, test the water quality vis-à-vis its pH & temperature, and compare the readings of the new tank with that of the old one. Similarly, run Air Stone and Filters in the new tank and compare the readings. In the case of even a slight difference between the two, don’t transfer the fishes to the new tank. You will need to re stabilize the new tank till the readings of both, the new and the old tank, are identical. In addition, dispense all the required aquarium water additives for a perfect water quality.
  • Hiding places. Preferably use the Sand Bed & Gravels of the old tank as the fishes are acquaint with these. If you need to introduce new Sand Bed & Gravels then, keep the old ones mixed with the new ones for easy fish acclimatization. Adding Plants, Rocks, Caves, and other hiding places in your new tank, will help your fishes feel more secure despite a new territory.
  • Ammonia & Nitrites Level. Do ensure that the toxic and disease inducing Ammonia and Nitrites levels are zero in the new tank. Do not over feed your fishes around the transfer time in order to keep a check on the Ammonia & Nitrite rich wastes in the new tank.
  • Lighting. Keeping the aquarium dark with its lights off or surrounding the aquarium with a towel for a day or two helps the fishes feel secure. This leverages the acclimatization process.
  • Power Supply. Your aquarium must get continuous power supply. A power failure of over 20 minutes in an aquarium will adversely affect its temperature, aeration, and filtration. Always check the Temperature and the condition of the Filters, once the power restores. If the Filters were off for over two hours, then we should change the Filter Media. Moreover, feed the fishes at least after 3 hours of the power restoration.
  • Fish transfer to the upgraded aquarium. Only after ensuring all of the above, can you move the fishes to this new upgraded tank with the help of Fish Net and Fish Cup.
