Aquarium Salt Creep

An Aquarium is a simulated natural water world in a tank, which makes for an interesting display, while meeting an aquarist’s passion of fish keeping. You put in the whole lot of efforts in keeping a striking visual appeal of your tanks, yet one thing or the other continues to require extra attention. One such Gray area about aquarium keeping, especially the Marine one, is Aquarium Salt Creep. The discussion below takes up the various aspects of Aquarium Salt Creep. Let us explore.

Aquarium Salt Creep – Introduction. Aquarium Salt Creep is a phenomenon in which salt crystals deposit on anything coming in regular contact with aquarium water, including Aquarium Walls, Equipment, Accessories, and other objects near to the tank. More often than not, water from an aquarium keeps splashing out for one reason or the other. This aquarium water contains Salt or Sodium Chloride. The Evaporation Point of salt is much higher than that of water. Therefore, water evaporates, leaving behind salt. Over a period, there develops a prominent layer of salt, called Aquarium Salt Creep, which not only looks odd but is also difficult to remove. In addition, Salt is corrosive in nature and therefore, it reacts with the materials it comes in contact with, damaging them in one way or the other. The degree of harm depends on the material of the item and the time span an item is in contact with salt.

Aquarium Salt Creep – The Issues.

  • Reduced Aquarium Water Level. As the tank water keeps splashing out and evaporating, there will be a marked reduction in the water level. Periodic water changes and refilling help your tank cope with the reduced level.
  • Reduced Salinity Level. Along with water level fall, the salt level or the Salinity level of the aquarium also declines, which you may regularly gauge with the help of Aquarium Salinity Tests. If found slightly low, add a bit of extra salt during water changes to bring the Salinity of the aquarium water to the required salt level. If, however, the Salinity dips drastically, then stabilize it in steps rather than employing single shot.
  • White Spots. White Water Spots develop on the places, where saltwater settled and then dried out leaving behind Aquarium Salt Creep.
  • Blurred Surface. Articles made of Glass, Acrylic, and Plastic; including Aquarium Lights and the outer walls of the tank, develop foggy appearance due to Aquarium Salt Creep.
  • Layered. Metal surfaces develop a hard layer of salt over them.

  • Salt Creep – The Resolve.
  • Reduced exposure. Try reducing the splashing out of water from the tank and try slashing the time of the contact of salt with other substances. You may do so by carefully handling the water during water changes and covering the surfaces in the Splash Zone with towels or some other clothes or material.
  • Regular Cleaning. To reduce the time span of the contact of salt water with the surfaces in its vicinity, the best way is to do regular cleaning up of these objects and surfaces with fresh water. For the objects external to aquarium, you may also soak a cloth in a small amount of Vinegar and use it for wiping surfaces. This trick works on most of the materials.
  • Reduced Vicinity. Place the aquarium in a place where you can allow quite a good span of empty space around it. If that is not possible then keep the things as much away from the Aquarium Splash Zone as possible.
  • Protective Coating. Apply the relevant protective coatings on the surfaces near aquarium. You may laminate the walls with Acrylic or other fibre.
