Aquarium Powerheads

Why Powerheads? It is often said that maintaining an aquarium is trickier than the first setup. To support the aquatic life in a tank, the natural habitat is simulated as far as feasible. In itself, the marine tank water is stagnant, unlike the natural water bodies. The oceans regularly receive the fresh water of flowing rivers. In addition, their enormous size prevents any negative effects of stationary waters. Similarly, the aquarium water needs circulation to stay fresh and healthy for the resident animals. Electrical motors called powerheads perform this function.

What are the benefits of powerheads? Powerheads are submersible water pumps, used to circulate water inside the tank. They come in different sizes, to fit in the aquariums of varying dimensions. Among the key benefits of these pumps are:

  • Filtering supplement: When positioned correctly, they help the other filtering systems. Circulation helps in feeding the protein skimmers, under gravel filters, and dry or wet trickle filters, with draughts of water. This boosts the contact of water with the filtering systems from all the corners of a marine tank.
  • Aeration: Powerheads circulate the water in such a way that its exposure to atmospheric air is increased. This in turn helps in the oxygenation of the tank water. Aeration aids in providing more oxygen for the animals that plunges sharply in still water.
  • Checking unwanted elements: Stagnant water is a thriving medium for certain types of unwanted algae. A water circulation system effectively checks such growth.
  • Water stream. Certain marine animals are accustomed to the ‘turbulent flow’ of water. Such internal streams are essential for their health. Powerheads effectively create such desired ‘disturbance’ in water.

  • What are the considerations in choosing powerheads? It is obvious to see that the size of a powerhead should be compatible with the tank measurements. In addition, the following factors to be considered when you purchase a powerhead:
  • Insulation: One of the most serious arguments against the use of powerheads is that they may lead to stray current flow in the water. The pumps must be well insulated and be properly maintained while running. Grounding probes and voltage detectors should be used to detect a current flow, if any.
  • Heating: Many types of submersible pumps have reported overheating and eventually, heating up the tank water.
  • Noise: Avoid pumps that make noise, as this is likely to distract the animals and may affect their health in the long term. Get the current, heating, and noise aspects of the powerhead tested in front of you, before buying.
  • Flow Rate: Ensure that the outflow of from the pump is sufficient to feed it into the filtering equipment and keep the detritus whirling in the water.
  • Quality Standards: Powerheads in a marine aquarium are constantly in touch with the salty water. Therefore, inferior material could mean an early corrosion of the pump.

  • Overall, going for reputed brands or local sellers can minimize much of the above risks. Proper care further ensures long-lasting, well-functioning powerheads.
