Aquarium Plants Care

Every hobbyist desires a healthy, vibrant, and great looking aquarium. You infuse quite a lot of bucks on the Aquarium Accessories, such as, beautiful Gravels, Stones, and Wood Decors to name some. However, none of these can replace the importance of natural Aquatic Plants. It is these plants, which not only enhance the beauty of the tank, but also give the required natural feel to it. In addition, they perform a number of other vital functions inside the tank, such as, the oxygenation of water, balancing the water chemistry, and serving as an additional site for the favorable bacteria to grow. As these plants are live and perform multiple tasks, their care and maintenance is of paramount importance. The discussion below touches briefly some areas pertaining to Aquarium Plants Care.

Plant Type. It helps if before actually purchasing any plant, you carry out a research to short list the Aquatic Plants requiring similar care environment. Do consider the likes and the dislikes of the fish vis-à-vis these plants.

Specimen Purchase. Make sure that the plants you purchase are healthy and young. Check the plants for not having Brown or Yellowing Leaves, Holes, or bent Stems. Once you have purchased the plants of your choice, carry them home in a moist Plastic Bag or damp Newspapers.

Aquarium Planting. Carefully remove the dead Roots, Stems, or Leaves of these Aquatic Plants before planting them into your aquarium. It is advisable to add all the plants at the time of aquarium set up, so that before Algae consume available extra light and nutrients, these plants are already established in the system.

Plant Substrate. You may grow these plants on Pea Gravel, Aquarium Gravel, Clay, Quartz, and Lime Free Gravel or Sand. These Substrates give plants a place to root in, obtain nutrients, and develop. Sometimes even a combination of these Substrates can be used, depending up on the requirement of plants and other controlling environmental factors available, such as heat, light, and temperature. Before placing your aquatic plants in the aquarium, drawing a rough sketch of the tank with probable plants helps in actually organizing them inside the aquarium, including the ones to be placed in back-ground, middle-ground, and fore-ground.

Water Quality. Aquatic Plants grow well in the aquarium with its optimum water temperature stabilized between 72 and 81 degrees Fahrenheit. It is important to keep the temperature of the tank constant, as many plants are sensitive to changes. A good Heater is therefore necessary. Right Water Hardness and pH levels are also vital for a sustained growth and good health of aquarium plants. Aquarium Lighting. Adequate lighting plays a very important role when we are talking about the well-being and the good growth of aquarium plants, which in turn affects the general health of aquarium. Plants need light for Photosynthesis. Therefore, the aquarium should stay illuminated, preferably with Fluorescent Bulbs, for approximately 10-14 hours a day. In deep tanks however, where Fluorescent Bulbs are not able to illuminate the tank well, you may use Mercury Vapor Lamps.

Nutrients. Plants require both, Macro and Micro, Nutrients to grow. Macronutrients include Nitrates, Phosphates, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Potassium, Magnesium, and Sulfates, and are required in large amounts. These are usually naturally present in aquarium and therefore, you do not need to add them in. Micronutrients, on the other hand, are the elements that are required in trace amounts and their overdose may prove harmful. Key Micronutrients for Aquatic Plants entail Copper, Iron, Manganese, Boron, Zinc, and Calcium. You need to supplement Micronutrients in your aquarium.

Carbon Dioxide Supplementation. Plants require Light, Water, and Carbon Dioxide for Photosynthesis, a process that helps them grow and aerate the environment. Therefore, in case the amount of Carbon dioxide present in your aquarium is not adequate for your plants, then you will need to go for Carbon Dioxide Fertilization.

Aquarium Filter. Make sure that your Aquarium Filter does not cause much water disturbance and it should keep the tank free of the light absorbing waste particles.

Plant Pruning. Just like Garden Plants, periodically remove the unwanted parts of your Aquatic Plants. This aids in the fuller plant growth.
