4-Stripe Damsel Fish - Dascyllus melanurus

The Black-tailed Dascyllus or Four-striped Damsel is a great starter fish for a beginning marine aquarist! Besides being handsome, the Black-tailed Dascyllus or Four-striped Damselfish are hardy, they will readily eat just about anything, and they are not expensive.

The coloration of Black-tailed Dascyllus or Four-striped Damselfish consists of white and black vertical bars, covering the length of the fish. There is usually a total of four black bars and three white bars with a small white spot just above the lip of the fish.

Black-tailed Dascyllus or Four-striped Damsel are found in the Indo-Australian Archipelago and western Caroline Islands including Indonesia, Philippines, New Guinea, and the northern Great Barrier reef of Australia. Found at depths up to 10 meters, it is associated with isolated coral heads in sheltered inshore habitats.

Like all damselfish, the Four-striped Damsefish can be territorial and aggressive, especially as they get older. These fishes can be kept together and with other larger fish but watch them closely to be sure their aggression doesn't become destructive.

General Size Specifications:
The Black-tailed Dascyllus or Four-striped Damsel is among the easiest of all marine fish to keep. The Black-tailed Dascyllus or Four-striped Damsel adults can grow to 7.5 cm or 3.0 inches. The largest Four-striped Damsel found is of 4.0 inches.

Minimum Tank Size:
The Four-striped Damselfish require a minimum of 15 gallon water tank if it is to be kept alone. To be kept with other species it need a large tank. This species also makes an excellent marine reef aquarium fish because it will not harm invertebrates.

Feeding and Diet:
The Four-striped Damselfish will readily eat all kinds of live, frozen, and flake foods and algae. Finely chopped meaty foods (like brine shrimp) can be fed regularly. It is best to feed small amounts several times a day. In a reef situation they don't really need to be fed very often at all.

Habitat:
The Four-striped Damselfish are found throughout the Indo-Pacific region; on the northern portion of the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia to Solomon and Mariana Islands, north to Ryukyu. These fishes are found in depth range of .03-10 mm.
